The Horse & Jockey Community Pub is conveniently located in the village of Northwood, beside the B5068 road which runs in a roughly North ßà South direction between the small Market Towns of Wem (4 miles south) and Ellesmere (6miles north) in rural North Shropshire. Other local Market Towns in North Shropshire include Whitchurch (10 miles), Oswestry (14 miles), Market Drayton (19 miles) and the County Town of Shrewsbury (16 miles south.)
Northwood is situated on the border with Wrexham County, North East Wales (in fact part of the boundary stream runs through the village), which adds to its “international” flavour and appeal!
We’re close to the Llangollen Canal, and are particularly well situated at the confluence of the fascinating area known as the Meres and Mosses which straddle the Welsh border locally.
Collectively these geographical treasures form a nationally and internationally important Ramsar Site, and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, for their contribution to fighting climate change, and providing a unique habitat for various types of flora and fauna.
The special Fenn’s, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses, and Wem Moss formed following the retreat of the last Ice Age about 15,000 years ago, are all only a stones throw from Northwood.
Our handy location puts many other interesting towns and villages, and visitor attractions, within easy reach too. So, If you’d like to pop in to our lovely Community Pub for a quick drink or snack, or a more lengthy and relaxing drink or meal while on your travels, you can be sure of a warm welcome.
Whatever your mode of transport eg. car, bike, foot, narrowboat the pub has ample off-road parking, and being a Free House we’re able to offer a wide variety of drinks including Real Ales.
